It is not easy to stand out in a sea of me-too Android tablets, but the 10-inch Toshiba Excite 10 ($ 449) hopes to achieve your attention with its quad-core performance, wealth of connections and an expandable memory via an SD card slot. All this is a design that is very slim, given the amount of features including Toshiba offered. Find out if the slate is right for you.
Click EnlargeThe Excite 10 is heavier and thicker than its premium cousin, the Excite 10 LE, but it is easy to carry. The slate measures 10.3 x 7.0 x 0.35 inches and 1.29 pounds, compared with 10.1 x 6.9 x 0.3 inches and 1.1 pounds for the LE. The Excite 10 is certainly more portable than competing quad-core Android tablets like the Acer Iconia Tab A510 (1.5 pound, 10.2 x 6.9 x 0.43 inches and ASUS Transformer TF300 pad (1.6 pounds , 10.35 x 7.11 x 0.38 inches).
Instead of a sleek, brushed aluminum back panel to the LE, the majority of the 10 Excite back a champagne-silver-aluminum back surface with a dimple. While not as elegant, we found this treatment, the Excite accounts for 10 to grip. The top and sides of the plate are wrapped in a matt aluminum-silver band. There is a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash in the upper left corner of the back and a chrome Toshiba logo is located in the lower right corner.
A thick black bezel surrounds the 10-inch display, and both are very susceptible to fingerprints and smudges.
While we like the Excite 10 products design, we have a problem with the size of its proprietary charger. Instead of the small plug from the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and used the iPad, the Excite 10 uses a large, bulky plugs.
Click EnlargeIt's nice to see that the Excite 10 packs a full-size SD card slot, which is the supplied memory expandable up to 128GB. The right side of the device is a micro HDMI port to output content to a TV and Micro-USB for syncing with a PC.
The first thing we noticed about the Excite 10's 1280 x 800 resolution, was the lack of visible grid lines, a big step up from the 10 LE. We were also in how the display looked vibrant and sharp struck. Text was nice and crispy on both CNN.com and Joystiq.com. As we saw a 1080p trailer for "The Great Gatsby" remake on YouTube, impressed the abundance of color.
Click the electric blue EnlargeLeonardo DiCaprio looked packed, despite the bright whites, deep blacks and vivid pink and green of the flapper dresses to slim bodies that undulate and flutter Roaring Twenties-style. We were also taken with scenes from the infamous mustard Rolls-Royce as they barreled down the road.
At 460 lux, the Excite is 10, the display one of the brighter panels we've seen in a 10-inch tablet. This is higher than the average of 355 lux category, and the iPad 386 lux rating. Nevertheless, it was not 10 the Excite compare the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime's sky-high 550 lux rating.
The Excitement 10 The display also features 10-finger multi-touch support, as well as haptic feedback, emitting a slight noise when pressed. While the latter practically we found when typing it proved to be distracting at other times, such as when swiping. Fortunately, you can disable this feature in the settings.

While it barely filled our small tasting room, we could clearly distinguish the warm tones of the piano against Marsha Ambrosius' emotion crafted ballad "Far Away". Although we hear some bass, it was rather weak. Pearl Jam live version of "Once" was loud enough, but fairly flat.
Click EnlargeThe Excite 10 comes with a laptop keyboard for Android and Skype. Both input options offer large black buttons with a lot of distance. However, we prefer the Skype key, as it provides typing and track access to alternate character on a long press of a button. There are also Google Voice typing, allowed us to dictate our texts and e-mail. We found the system pretty well, except for homonyms such as "pair" and "roof cut."
Software and Interface
The Toshiba Excite 10 runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with very little modification from Toshiba. There are five known homescreens waiting to be filled with various apps and widgets. The ubiquitous black bar along the bottom system is also with icons for back, completed home, Recent Apps, Wi-Fi, battery life and a digital clock.
Pressing the Clock calls the shadow notifications that the time and date, and network settings, including flight mode that shows audio enhancement and activation of Balanced Power.
Icons for Google search and the Apps side sitting in the upper right and left corner of the interface. Ice Cream Sandwich trademark features such as capturing screenshots and close running programs in the Recent apps with a simple finger movement are also available.
Click on the EnlargeLike 10 LE Excite, Excite the 10 comes with a robust suite of multimedia applications, including Netflix, Amazon Kindle and Aupeo!, A music streaming service similar to Slacker Radio, which are, according to custom station artists create genre or mood can be packaged. Crackle, a free streaming movie service, was one of our favorite apps, thanks to its wide range, including the cult classic "The Last Dragon".
Excite The 10 also comes with a free trial version of Kaspersky security software the tablet, as well as the Quickoffice suite HD Lite and the Zinio app from magazines and newspapers.
The usual suite of Google Apps are also here, such as Gmail, Maps, Play (apps, books, music and movies), and YouTube.
The Toshiba Excite 10 is a quad-core processor Nvidia Tegra 3 and 1 GB of RAM. On the CPU benchmark score broke the Excite 10 of 3349, higher than the Excite 10 LE-3210 and is significantly above the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (2834, 1.2 GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor and 1 GB of RAM) and the category average by 2752. The Excite 10 has, however, miss the 4096 scored the 3-Tegra-powered Eee Pad Transformer Prime and the quad-core Acer Iconia Tab 510 (3906).
The Excite 10 of the Nvidia GeForce graphics GPU helped it perform well on the slate An3DBench test, notching a record 10 006. This is well above the 6779 scored by the Galaxy 2 10.1, the average for the category 7196, and even the 8050 set by the Eee Pad Transformer Prime.
In the real world tests that Excite was 10 as well as its benchmark figures suggest it here. Apps opened quickly, scrolling through websites was lag-free, and overall performance was soft as butter.
Camera and Camcorder
Click EnlargeThe Excite 10 of the 5-megapixel rear-facing camera caught grainy photos. A shot of a rose bush suffered distortion, which reduces the sharpness of the image. However, colors were spot on. We also noticed a significant delay in the camera's shutter speed, in spite of the camera set to auto. A video of the same rose bush offered equally grainy visuals.
Pictures taken with the Excite 10 the 2-megapixel front-facing camera while in a well lit room were similarly blurred. We have found that images darker than the preview image made her seem to appear.
With a prismatic lithium-polymer 2-cell battery lasted only 6 Toshiba Excite 10 hours and 26 minutes on the laptop battery test, which consists of continuous Web browsing over Wi-Fi. That's about half an hour less than the average for the category 6.55 and the ASUS Transformer TF300 Pad (7:00). The Eee Pad Transformer Prime managed 7:47 is in sleep mode while the Galaxy Tab ran an incredible 9:59 2 10.1.
Toshiba Excite Our 10 came with a Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory at a price of 449 $. Users looking for a bit more memory can move up to the 32GB model for $ 529 while a 64GB version costs $ 649.
